International General Certificate of Education

IGCSE
Our International General Certificate of Education ( IGCSE ) programme has been followed by students on Moshi Campus since 1986 and on Arusha Campus since 1999. In the school year 2008/09 we will be replacing IGCSE certification with the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme certificates.

Students at ISM prepare for the IGCSE in their 11th year (S5) by undertaking coursework followed by final examinations in June 2008. Students who are between 15 and 16 years of age may be admitted to S5 at the beginning of the course in August, but admissions during the S5 year are also possible if space permits.  A successful student can expect to join our prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma programme after completing the IGCSE. Other students proceed to join an IB Certificate programme as part of the ISM High School Diploma.

The IGCSE curriculum is written and examined by the University of Cambridge's Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES). It parallels the GCSE examinations in the United Kingdom, although is designed for international students, and is recognised world-wide as being equivalent to these qualifications.

All students are expected to participate in CAS (Creative, Active and Service) activities on a regular basis. They may opt for one or more from the many activities on offer each term. Examples of CAS activities in recent years include: Drama, Dance, Art, Embroidery, Model United Nations, Chess, Amnesty International, Environmental Concerns, Calligraphy, Computing, visiting patients at the local hospital, teaching children from a nearby children's home to swim, or playing with children in the hospital's children's ward.

Students are encouraged to participate actively in sports activities chosen from the many available, and to join in our Outdoor Pursuits programme which offers trips away most weekends.

The school's S5 Handbook is available from our Download page.

Further information on the IGCSE is available from CIE Web Site the Cambridge website.
