| 4 September 2007 Dear Parents, The first month of the new school year is in the books, and I would like to thank you for your patience and support. The first weeks of a new term are always challenging. However, I have been pleased with how well both new and returning students have settled into their routines. Much of the credit for this goes to Sunita Somaiya, Andrew Mackenzie, and Jana Eaton for their leadership in their respective areas. Please remember that these individuals should be your first point of contact when communicating about the residential programme. It is also important to acknowledge the efforts of our newly assembled Boarding Council. Belinda Tindyebwa (Chair), Julia Pierre-Nina (Deputy-Chair/Secretary), Aditya Aggarwal (Chair of Food Council), and Laurence Blair (Chair of Activities Council), have been contributing significantly to the life of the residential community. They will be the vanguard of student leadership in the residential programme and they have already helped us arrive at appropriate decisions in a number of situations. They will be essential players in bringing our theme of "Students At The Centre" to life. Moreover, three parents deserve to be singled out for their early contributions. Pauline Martin is the PCM representative responsible for liaising with the boarding team. I meet regularly with Pauline and provide information relating to programme development and day-to-day operations. She is also an able advisor and has already been into my office several times this term. I am confident she will continue to fulfil her role with like diligence. Following on from this, I would like to thank Fini Strebel for her tireless effort with the Arusha bus. The bus is up and running and if anyone can keep it on the road, it is Fini. Lastly, a special thanks to Annette Pierre-Nina who helped us organise a day out for boarders at the new cinema in Arusha. If you have suggestions for boarding activities, and/or would like to lead or organise an event, please contact one of us. On the residential education front, we have also been active. At various times throughout the term, we meet in houses to discuss events in the community, and to learn from them. One such occasion presented itself last week, and I was very impressed with the way boarding parents, and members of the Boarding Council responded. They were able to facilitate professional and helpful workshops in each of the secondary boarding areas on assault prevention. The end result was a better-informed residential body. A few notable events for the calendar are the start of the Rugby Word Cup, which we will celebrate with a rugby themed weekend from September 7th-9th. The weekend of September 14th-16th will be our annual trip weekend, when we encourage all boarders to stay for the weekend to participate in a boarding trip (more details to follow), and the Sports Tournament with the Arusha Campus, which will take place in Moshi from September 21st-23rd. Parents are more that welcome to join us as spectators for the Sports Tournament. Karibu Moshi! Indeed September is shaping up to be a busy month. Mama Somaiya will be meeting soon with Muslim students to discuss special arrangements and needs during the Holy Month of Ramadan, and as September draws to a close, we will begin making travel arrangements for the October holidays. If we can assist you with travel in October, or if you would like us to arrange an airport drop-off or pick-up for your child, please let us know as soon as possible. Jana Eaton manages boarding transport and is reachable by phone (0754-751425) or email ( or ). Enjoy the African Spring! Sincerely, Richard Eaton Head of Boarding International School Moshi | |
