| 2 November 2007 Dear Parents, November seems to have arrived quickly. At least in Moshi this means warmer temperatures. I hope you enjoyed a refreshing October holiday with your children. Jana and I spent part of our holiday - and the week after the holidays - in Peru interviewing and exploring options for the future. Needless to say, it’s always nice to be home. I enjoyed seeing many of you at parent teacher conferences in October and I am in the process of arranging a meeting for Arusha based parents at the end of this month. Before the end of the term we also hope to host Arusha S5 students considering boarding and the IB diploma programme for a brief Moshi Campus orientation. More details related to both of these events will be forthcoming. This month we welcome two new boarding parents to our team and say farewell to another. Tina Moyale - spouse of Ben, a Maths teacher on the Moshi Campus - joins us as an Assistant Boarding Parent living in the Kilele/Kipepeo area. Sia Mrema - a teaching assistant in primary - will be taking over as the Primary Boarding Assistant. She replaces Maria Nurbhai who leaves us this week to further her education in India. Karibu Tina and Sia - best wishes, Maria! Last weekend boarders enjoyed the sun - and evening rain - in Pangani. I would like to thank Mama Somaiya for organising the trip, and Mr. Mackenzie and family for accompanying. This weekend the ISM Development Office is working with the boarding team to host a Hallowe’en fundraiser for our Scholarship Programme. There will be a bake sale, a primary disco, trick-or-treating, a BBQ, and a bonfire on campus. We hope boarders and day students alike will be able to enjoy the festivities. We are also looking forward to the many OP trips that will take place this month, as well as visits from a number of guest speakers, starting with Elaine Mache on Sunday, November 4th. She will provide a workshop on feminine issues for our female residents and interested day students. Furthermore, there will be self-defence workshops on offer for boarders over the next two weeks. Following on from this, there are a few business issues that I would like to pass on. (1) If your son/daughter is an Arusha resident and you have ticked the box on the Parental Consent Form (PC Form) that says they are to return home each weekend, please remember to inform us if, on the contrary, they choose to stay in boarding for the weekend. This assures us that you are not expecting them, and entitles us to allow them to make plans to sign out here, etc. (2) Several students returned early from the holidays without informing their boarding parents. We endeavour to be flexible at the start of each term, and it is very helpful to know in advance if a student will be returning early. Your support and understanding is appreciated. I will be away from school again later this month (November 16th - 24th). During this time I will be leading an OP trip on Mt. Kilimanjaro, followed by a week of marketing in Tanga, Iringa, Morogoro, and Dodoma. If you know people in these areas that may be interested in ISM, please inform them that we will be visiting. Exact dates, times, and venues will soon be finalised and announced. Mama Somaiya will be acting-Head of Boarding while I am away (). On the longer term horizon is the Moshi Campus Sports Weekend, December 7th-9th. A number of East Africa schools will be joining us for this occasion. We also hope to see parents in Moshi for the drama production of "Men At Arms", which will take place December 15th and 16th. For ticket information please contact Trevor Newman (). Finally, can I remind you that we strongly encourage parents to keep their children in school until the last day of term (December 19th). Classes and residential programming continue through this date. Please feel free to let us know in advance if we can assist with end of term travel arrangements. Have a great month! . Sincerely, Richard Eaton Head of Boarding International School Moshi | |
