Moshi Campus News - 5 June 2007

This newsletter is sent to all parents of students in Moshi Campus whose email addresses we have on file. If you know of a parent who is not receiving these newsletters, please let me know so that their address can be added to the mailing list. Recent past newsletters are available to view at www.ismoshi.org/ParentNews.htm.

Reports & End of Term Arrangements

Primary students received their reports on Monday and S1-S4 and IB1 students will receive all reports on Wednesday, 6th June. Parent meetings for primary will be on Wednesday afternoon from 2pm. Parent meetings for parents of students in Secondary will be on Friday morning, 8th June in Karibu Hall, from 10:30am to 12 noon. Classes will finish for students at 10:15am on Friday, 8th June.

Early departures

We are disappointed by the number of students who have left for the holidays early, even though this term finishes so early in June. It is more difficult for teachers to ensure that class time is well spent when a high percentage of students are absent. We would strongly encourage parents not to withdraw their students early (or for them to return to school late) unless this is necessary.

Summit Magazine

The June 2007 edition of the Summit magazine will be given to all students this week. This is also available to download in pdf format from our website at www.ismoshi.org/Download.htm.

Scholarship Programme

Parents may be interested to read the June 2007 edition of New African magazine which includes an article on ISM's Scholarship Programme (page 64). If we can obtain permission from the copyright holder, we also hope to post this on the school website.

Teacher Appreciation Evening

Teachers thoroughly enjoyed an evening last week hosted by the Parents Committee Moshi to show their appreciation of the year's work. Many thanks to the PCM for organising this.

Graduation

Congratulations to our former IB2 students who graduated from ISM on 26th May. Pictures of the ceremony are available at www.ismoshi.org/grad07.htm. Our graduates will receive their IB Diploma results online on 6th July - each student has been given instructions on how to obtain these results.

S5 Ceremony

Congratulations also to the S5 students from both campuses who had ceremonies on 1st June. They will need to wait a bit longer for their IGCSE results which will be published on 9th August.

Kiswahili teaching

Mrs Mvungi, who teaches some of the S1-S4 Swahili classes as well as the IB1 ab initio Swahili class, has been away ill for the whole of this last term. Within the last three weeks of school, we have been able to get the assistance of another Swahili teacher who has taught many of Mrs Mvungi's classes. We wish Mrs Mvungi a speedy recovery and hope all will be well by the start of next term.

Holiday Hours on Campus

The school office will be open from 7:30am to 4pm Mondays to Fridays during the holidays in case of any financial enquiries. If you have any curriculum or admission enquiries during the holidays, I can be contacted by email, and will also be able to deal with enquiries directly from 30th July.

ABRSM Theory Exams

The next set of music theory examinations will be held on Wednesday, 3rd October. Students who wish to register for these must inform Mr Steve Jones this week before June 7th.

Holiday Reading

We would like to ask parents to help us to encourage your children to take the opportunity of this long holiday to catch up with a bit of reading. A recommended holiday reading list is available for all classes at www.ismoshi.org/reading.pdf.

Leaving Teachers

We are sorry to be saying goodbye to those teachers who will be leaving ISM this week. These are Sarah Hopkins, Jen Jones, Stephanie McPhee and Marion Lott from Primary, Andy Bowness and Chris Johansson from Boarding, Steve Bereza, Duncan Perrin, Jack Okoth and John Hopkins from Secondary. We wish them all the very best in their future endeavours.

Calendar

The provisional Moshi Campus Calendar for term one is available to download at www.ismoshi.org/Calendar.htm.

Dress Code

In response to many requests, we have decided to make our dress code for secondary students clearer for the new year. The new dress code is as follows:
ISM has a dress code to convey a message of respectability to our community and reflect the standards that are a part of ISM. We are a school in Tanzania and should be aware of community and cultural expectations regarding student dress both when attending classes and when going off campus.
The following dress code will be expected for students who attend International School Moshi:
1. A smart, collared shirt OR T-shirt (without inappropriate labeling) or sleeved blouse to cover most of the upper torso, i.e. no exposed midriff or chest, no exposed underwear.
2. Trousers, shorts or skirt. Pants/trousers must be worn around the waist without exposed underwear.
3. No rubber/plastic malapas (flip-flops) on feet. Leather shoes or sandals are appropriate.

The dress code should be followed:
1. Monday to Thursday: 7:30am to 3pm, Friday: 7:30am to 12:35pm
Day students will also be required to follow the dress code when travelling between school and home. Boarding students are expected to follow the dress code for the times stated above.
2. During school field trips or excursions from the school, unless specifically stated otherwise.
3. To various school functions that represent ISM unless other attire is requested.

All clothing should be clean, tidy and in good repair.
Clothes, jewellery, make-up or hairstyles which may give offence to those in the community should not be worn. In particular clothes or ornaments which advertise alcohol, cigarettes or drugs or which contain offensive language or pictures should not be worn. Suitable footwear should be worn for all classes and activities.
For PE you will need a white shirt and plain black shorts and appropriate footwear; a swimming costume or swimming trunks and towel are needed for pool use.

Students who are inappropriately dressed may be asked to change, may be given alternative clothing to wear or may be asked to go home to change.

Students have been given this dress code in the new Secondary Students Handbook which is also available to download from www.ismoshi.org/Download.htm.

Detentions

From the start of next year, we will be implementing a more formal system of detentions for students who fail to meet class or homework expectations. We believe that a more consistent approach to these issues and a clear sanction will help students to complete work more effectively and provide a supportive structure for them. These detentions will take place on Friday afternoons from 1:20pm so as not to conflict with other classes or required activities. They will only be given to students who have failed to meet expectations after an initial warning. If a student does receive a detention on a Friday afternoon, they will be required to attend.

Miscellaneous Charges in 07/08

As a result of inflation and other changing costs, some of our charges will increase from 1st August 2007.
Swimming pool membership cards will still be available at the same prices, but the daily ticket price will increase to TSh 4000/-.
Meal ticket prices for day students will increase to TSh 3000/- for lunch or supper and TSh 1500/- for breakfast. Morning snacks will cost TSh 5000/- per week.
Individual music lessons will be charged at TSh 9000/- per half hour
The price for staying at the school house in Pangani will remain at TSh 30,000/- per night for the house.

Fees for 2007/08

Parents are reminded that the first instalment of school fees for the 07/08 year are due for payment by 1st July. If you wish to benefit from the reduced fee for payment of the full year in advance, this must be received by 1st July.

Start of Term One 07/08

Boarders should return to school between 12 noon and 5pm on Sunday, 12th August. New boarders are encouraged to be in school before 3:30pm as the orientation for new boarders and their parents will start at that time.
Classes will start at 7:30am on Monday, 13th August.
Primary classes (P1 to P6) will end at 13:05 on Mondays to Thursdays next school year (instead of teaching from 1:20pm to 1:50 as at present)
M1 (S1) students will have an initial orientation to secondary on the first day of school, August 13th. This follows on from the P6->M1 transition day which is being held this week on 7th June.
D1 (IB1) students will be spending a couple of days from 13th August in their own orientation programme. This will include discussion about subject choices, an introduction to research and essay writing and an introduction to the CAS programme. It is important that all D1 students attend this orientation from the start.

Parent Meetings

The first week of term term includes a number of meetings for parents. Parents of students in M1 (S1) will have an introduction to the MYP on Tuesday, 14 August. Primary parents will have the opportunity to meet with their children's teachers on 15th and 16th August. There will also be an evening for parents of students in M4 (S4) on Thursday, 16th August.

Farewell to Students

Finally I would like to say farewell to those students who will be leaving ISM this school year. We all wish them all the very best in their next school and in their future endeavours.

May I end by wishing all ISM families an enjoyable break and a good rest. We are looking forward to a new year ahead with its promise of many challenges and opportunities.
