International School Moshi
Moshi Campus News - 1st October 2007

Dear Parents:

Idd el Fitr (added 8 Oct 07)

The Idd el Fitr holiday is provisionally scheduled to be on Saturday and Sunday, 13th and 14th October 2007.

However there is a possibility that the new moon may be sighted on the evening of Thursday, 11th October, in which case the national authorities may declare Friday, 12th October to be a national holiday. If this happens we are unlikely to know until late on Thursday evening if or when an announcement is made. As soon as we are officially informed we will inform all parents through the school website at www.ismoshi.org/idd and by email.

Please assume that there WILL be classes on Friday, unless you are otherwise told that Friday has been officially declared to be a public holiday.

If Friday is declared a public holiday, then the secondary parent meetings scheduled in Moshi for 10:35-12:35 on Friday, 12th October, will instead be rescheduled for 10:35-12:35 on Friday, 26th October and the bus carrying students from Moshi to Arusha will be asked to travel earlier on Friday morning rather than in the afternoon.

The TOEFL tests scheduled for Saturday, 13th October will take place irrespective of Tanzanian national holidays.

Contact Information

Many thanks to all the primary and secondary parents who have completed the forms that were sent home requesting updated contact information. If you have not yet given us these details, could you please complete the form at http://www.ismoshi.org/contactdetails and forward that to me as soon as possible. This will help us to ensure that email newsletters are sent to the correct addresses and also that we can contact you quickly if necessary.

M2 in Pangani

The M2 classes from both campuses are presently in Pangani undertaking field study and will return on Friday, 5th October.

SAT Tests

The final deadline for registering for the November 3rd SAT tests is Tuesday, 2nd October. Students need to register online. Details are given at http://www.ismoshi.org/SAT.htm.

Those students who registered earlier will be taking SAT tests this Saturday, 6th October and should be present in school by 7:45am and must bring identification with them.

TOEFL Tests

A number of students have registered to take TOEFL tests on Saturday, October 13th. Boarding students who have registered are welcome to remain in school on Friday evening (12th October) and to return home on Saturday after the test. It is not possible for students to take the TOEFL test unless they registered in advance. All students must bring their passports to the test for ID purposes (although Tanzanian citizens only may alternatively bring a driving licence).

PSAT tests

These will take place in Moshi on Saturday, 20th October and are designed for students in S5 or D1 who may wish to try out these preliminary (or practice) SAT tests. Students who wish to participate should contact Mrs Beveridge.

US Embassy Visit

Officials from the US Embassy will be in school in Moshi on Thursday, 4th October from 1pm to 2:30pm for citizen services. For those citizens living in Arusha, they will also be at the Arusha Campus on Wednesday, 3rd October from 1:30pm.

Parents Committee Moshi

There is a meeting of the Parents Committee Moshi on Tuesday morning, 2nd October.

Head of Primary

Kathy Slocombe will be away from school until the half-term break for personal reasons. During her absence the PYP Coordinator, Rosi Uluiviti, will be happy to answer any curriculum questions. Other issues will be handled by your child's class teacher or by Keiron White.

Outdoor Pursuits: Pare Mountains

Next weekend there is an OP trip to the Pare Mountains for students from both campuses. The group will be away on 6th and 7th October.

School Reports (Secondary)

Most of our secondary students (M1, M2, M3, M4, D1) will receive full reports with detailed teacher comments at the end of this term in December. Students in these classes will receive a grade card before the half term break which is designed to give you a quick summary of their performance to date. Students in S5 and D2 will receive a full detailed report next week and will receive the brief grade card in December.

We would welcome the opportunity to meet with parents after you have received your child's grade card or report. As a result we will be holding parent meetings in Karibu Hall to discuss your child's progress on Friday, 12th October from 10:35 am to 12:35 pm. Secondary students will therefore finish classes at 10:30 on Friday 12th October and are free to leave for the half-term break at that time. Primary classes will continue as usual until 12:35pm.

Half-Term Break

As indicated above, students are free to leave for the half term holiday after classes on Friday, 12th October. We would like to ask families not to withdraw their children from school early unless it is absolutely necessary, as this disrupts the educational process. Boarders should return by 6pm on Sunday, 21st October. Day students will start classes as usual at 7:30am on Monday, 22nd October.

ISM Website

Many new photos have been placed on the school website recently. These include photos from the S5 Tarangire trip, the M1 Campcraft trip to Marangu, the mini Sports weekend with Arusha Campus, the Moshi Secondary Sports Day, the Hard Labour trip to Materuni and the Art Attack inquiry of our P3/P4 class.

Strategic Planning

Also on the website are all the documents relating to the school's strategic planning process, including the final recommendations which were recently accepted by the Board in principle. These can be downloaded from http://www.ismoshi.org/pardocs with the username and password that you have been given.

Kilimanjaro Rugby Sevens

The Kilimanjaro Rugby Sevens will take place in school on Saturday, 13th October. All are welcome to spectate and enjoy the quality of rugby and the great atmosphere.

HP LaserJet 1200 Series Printer

A personal request here. Does anyone have a copy of the CD which comes with the above printer that I could borrow? I need to install the scanning software!

IT Development in School

As you may be aware we have had a nuber of problems with the school network in recent months and are now in the process of a complete re-development. To date Kijana and Kiongozi boarding houses have been re-wired or re-connected as have both the lower and upper computer rooms. The process takes time as our technical support needs to come from Arusha and is not always available. The next stage will be a re-wiring of all the classrooms in the tuition block and also of Kilele and Kipepeo boarding houses. We have also re-equipped the lower computer room with new machines and screens. All these developments will improve our IT infrastructure and services to students and we appreciate their patience as the changes slowly happen.

Boarding students will soon all have a network connection available free of charge in their bedrooms (this is already available in Kijana and Kiongozi) and may also apply to have an internet connection at a cost of $40 per month with parental agreement.

Kiraha House - Pangani

I would like to remind parents that you are welcome to book the school's beach house in Pangani for a personal trip. We are now taking bookings for the period up to 19th December. The house is fairly basic and provides a minimal level of comfort, but is in a superb location on a clifftop with easy beach access. The charge is TSh 30,000/- per night for the whole house for up to six people. If you would like to book, please see the receptionist in school.

Yours,
Keiron White
Head of Campus
