Moshi Campus News - 26 January 2008

Dear Parents,

Mock Examinations

The D2 and S5 students have now begun their mock (practice) examinations and these will continue until Monday, 4th February. During this period there will be no classes, CAS activities or compulsory sports for the D2 or S5 students and they will only need to attend school when they have an examination. Day students may return home to study if they do not have an examination, or they may work in the Library. Boarders may work in the Library (or Diploma students' study room) or in their own bedrooms at times when they do not have an exam. A few students will still have an exam on Tuesday, 5th February, but others will restart classes on that day.

D1 Field Study

All the D1 students will be away in Pangani from Tuesday 29th January to Friday 1st February where they will be camping at Kiraha (the ISM school house) and undertaking field study in Biology, Ecosystems and Societies, and Geography. Parents of students in D1 should have received a letter with more details of the trip.

Day Boarding

Our primary boarding staff have set up a programme of activities for primary day students to follow in the afternoons if parents would prefer them to remain in school until the evening. Richard Eaton and Kathy Slocombe are inviting any parent of a primary child in ISM who would like to learn more about this programme to a coffee morning in school at 8am on Friday, 1st February in Room 15.

Parent Association

The Parent Association held their first meeting of 2008 last week in Arusha. All parents are welcome to meet the members of the Parent Association for tea/coffee on Wednesday, 20th February in Room 15 in Moshi Campus from 2pm to 3pm. There will be a similar event on the Arusha Campus from 2pm to 3pm on Wednesday, 12th March.

ISM Website - Parents' Pages

Some new pages have been set up on the ISM Website at www.ismoshi.org/parents specifically to include items of direct interest to parents. The Parent Association will be making announcements and posting documents on these pages and we hope to develop the pages further as time goes on. Some documents have been posted on the website in a password-protected section so that ISM parents can access these, but they are not available globally. To access password protected documents, please use the username and password that has been sent to you by email. Amongst the most recently added documents are the December 2007 letter from CIS regarding our one-year accreditation report and minutes of Parent Association meetings.

Meet the Moshi Management Team

On Wednesday, 13th February at 4pm, we are inviting any ISM parent to tea/coffee and to come to chat about any aspect of the school. This will be an informal opportunity for parents to meet the management team of the Moshi Campus, myself as Head of Campus, Colin Beveridge as Head of Secondary, Kathy Slocombe as Head of Primary and Richard Eaton as Head of Boarding. We look forward to seeing you.

M2 Tutor

Mr Ben Moyale has now taken over the role of tutor of the M2 class and he will continue in this role at least until June. If your child is in M2, please feel free to contact him over any issues concerning the class.

Swahili Teaching

We are pleased to be able to welcome back Mrs Nainkwa Mvungi to the teaching staff from 1st February. Mrs Mvungi will now return to teaching the primary students, M4 Swahili, and the D1 Swahili B and Swahili ab initio classes. Many thanks to Joyce Semiono and Jolenta Nkya who have helped us considerably by working with these classes during Mrs Mvungi's absence. Joyce Semiono will continue to teach the M1-M3 class, and Jolenta Nkya will continue with her M1-M3 class and the D2 Swahili B and D2 Swahili ab initio.

Student Teacher

This term we have been pleased to welcome Jonathan Humston as a student teacher. Jonathan will be with ISM until May and will be working with the M1-M3 science classes and the M4 and D1 Chemistry classes. His work will be supervised by Mr Colin Beveridge.

Model United Nations

A group of students has been preparing to attend the Model United Nations at the UNEP Centre in Nairobi on February 17th to 23rd. Whilst there they will be representing the countries of India and Djibouti in debate on a variety of topical issues. The students concerned have invested a lot of work into their preparation and we are sincerely hoping that the trip will go ahead. However we do need to be mindful of the political and security situation in Kenya and will be taking the advice of the US and UK embassies on travel to Nairobi nearer the time.

ISA Tests

In the first half of February we will be administering ISA tests to students in the P5, M1 and M3 classes on both campuses. These standardised tests are intended to help us measure our students and our teaching programmes against those of other international schools. Students are not expected to prepare for the tests in any way and we intend to make the process as simple as possible for them. If you would like to read more about the tests that we took in 2006, please go to www.ismoshi.org/isaacer.htm.

Basketball and Football

ISM (Moshi Campus) will be hosting the following sports events in the next few months. If you would like further details regarding them please feel free to contact Ben Wiggins on or phone (027) 275 5005. Please pass this message onto others who might be interested:

Saturday 9th Feb
Basketball (Boys and Girls events)

Saturday 8th March
7 a side Soccer (Boys and Girls events)

Enrolment

I am pleased that the enrolment has gone up this term on the Moshi Campus and that we are now seeing more students joining us in the lower secondary classes which have been very small. With a redistribution of the Capital Development Fee (see below) and the free boarding being offered to new boarding students in classes up to M4, I am optimistic that our fee structure becomes much more affordable to many families and that, as word slowly filters out, we will see further new enrolments. We are still advertising through billboards in Dar es Salaam and recently placed a front page advertisement in The Guardian. We have also advertised in today's Daily Nation. Please help us to spread the word!

Capital Development Fees

In another move to encourage increased enrolment, the Board has now agreed to spread Capital Development Fee payments over three years. Hence, instead of a new student needing to pay $2150 in Capital Development Fees before joining the school or before moving to P1, parents can now pay $700 per year for three years.

Term Two Calendar

If you would like to download a copy of the Term Two calendar, please go to www.ismoshi.org/Calendar.htm.

Yellow Fever Vaccinations

I have been advised that the Tanzanian authorities are likely to more strictly enforce the regulation requiring a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination certificate from all travellers to Tanzania who are coming from an endemic area. This includes travellers entering Tanzania from Kenya or even those who have merely been in transit in Nairobi airport.

ABRSM Music Examinations

Only a very small number of people have registered for the February ABRSM theory examinations and the deadline for registration has now passed. There will be instrumental practical examinations here in Moshi in May and students must register for this before Friday, 8th February. If your child would like to register, please inform Mr Steve Jones before that date.

Scholarship Students

The national form four examination results from the 2007 examinations will be published in February and we will then begin our search for two new scholarship students to join our D1 programme as boarders in August 2008. We will be offering full scholarships to two Tanzanian citizens who have completed national CSEE examinations and obtained 7, 8 or 9 points in their best seven subjects. Further details are given at www.ismoshi.org/scholar.

Network and Internet Access

All boarding students in Kilele, Kipepeo, Kijana or Kiongozi boarding houses can access the ISM school network and file server from their bedrooms using their personal computers free of charge. Students who also wish to have internet access in their bedrooms can do so at a cost of US$40 per calendar month per registered computer providing that their parents have agreed to this. Normally we would not recommend unsupervised access to the internet to students younger than the D1 or D2 classes. All students can access the internet free of charge from the IT Centre.

Yours,
Keiron White
Head of Campus
