Moshi Campus News - 4 February 2008

Dear Parents,

New Students

Whilst the uncertain situation in Kenya continues,we are very aware that there are a number of families whose children were in school there and who are now considering seeking new options for their children. If you know of any such families who might possibly be considering ISM, I would be very grateful if you could encourage them to contact me. We are happy to arrange a "trial" day in classes or an evening/night in boarding for students who wish to get a taste of what ISM has to offer. Please find attached a letter addressed to any such families which you are welcome to pass on.

Kilimanjaro Marathon & Fun Run

On Sunday March 2nd, the Kilimanjaro Marathon will take place from Moshi. There is also a half marathon and a 5km Fun Run. We would like to raise an ISM team of students, parents, teachers and others to run (or even walk) in any of these races and to help us to raise additional funds for our Scholarship Programme. If each participant could raise just TSh 20,000/-, this could help the fund considerably. For more details, please go to www.ismoshi.org/marathon or contact Sarah Jamieson on or see the posters in the school. This could be a great family and school event! Closing date for registration for the ISM team is 15th February.

Scholarship Programme

ISM is now inviting applications from Tanzanian Form 4 Leavers (whose results were published last week) to join our diploma programme in August 2008 on a full tuition and boarding scholarship. If you know of any students of exceptional ability, please encourage them to review the details and criteria for application at www.ismoshi.org/scholarship. The closing date for applications is 20th February.

ABRSM Music Practical Exams

If your child would like to take a musical instrument practical examination in May, could you please let Mr Steve Jones know. The closing date for registration for these exams is on Friday, 8th February.

Parents Association

The Parents Association invites all parents to meet the full PA Committee for tea/coffee on Wednesday, 20th February from 2pm to 3pm in Room 15 on the Moshi Campus. Please feel welcome to come and discuss any issues that you may have with the committee. For those parents living in Arusha, there will be a similar event held on the Arusha Campus on 12th March.

Strategic Planning

I would like to encourage all parents to read the recommendations that have been made by the Strategic Planning Committee. A number of strategic directions were identified by the committee which included improving marketing & fundraising, cultivating and communicating the school’s vision, and improving staffing structures.

Amongst the recommendations made by the committee under cultivating and communicating the school's vision were the joint school parent association, identical house colours and names on both campuses, uniforms for school teams, a common school primary uniform, increased interschool sporting fixtures, joint campus sporting and social events, and parent run induction for new parents.

A number of these recommendations are now in place such as house colours and teams common across the school. There are other recommendations that are being considered such as a common primary school uniform. Although specific decisions have not yet been made regarding the primary uniform, we are currently working towards a plan for the two primary campuses which will be discussed at February's Parent Association meeting.

These documents are available through the parents' pages at www.ismoshi.org/parents.htm. The username and password that has been given to parents should give you access to the documents.

ACER - ISA Tests

On Monday this week and on Thursday we are administering the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) International Schools' Assessment (ISA) tests to students in the P5, M1 and M3 classes on both campuses. These standardised tests are intended to help us measure our students and our teaching programmes against those of other international schools. Students are not expected to prepare for the tests in any way and we are trying to make the process as simple as possible for them. If you would like to read more about the tests that we took in 2006, please go to www.ismoshi.org/isaacer.htm.

Lost Property

If you find an item of lost property in the campus, please hand it to our receptionist in the main office, Anita. Please also see her if you wish to search for an item that your child has lost.

ISM Website

Some changes took place in the design of the school website at www.ismoshi.org during December/January. Many thanks to Shri Dinavahi for her design work and assistance with the changeover.

Primary Carnival

On Friday, 8th February, all the primary students will be taking part in a Carnival Procession around the school followed by a pot luck lunch at the swimming pool until 3pm. We look forward to welcoming you to this event.

Basketball

This weekend, Saturday, 9th February, Moshi Campus will be hosting a local basketball tournament between teams from different schools. Both boys and girls basketball matches will take place.

Model United Nations

We have not yet made a final decision concerning the student group planning to take part in the Model United Nations conference in Nairobi from February 18th to 22nd. I am seeking advice from the British High Commission and US Embassy in Nairobi and we will contact the parents of the students concerned once we have received this.

Newsletters

All the newsletters for the last year are available from the parents pages on the school website at www.ismoshi.org/parents. These include primary and boarding newsletters as well as those from Arusha Campus.

Yours,
Keiron White
Head of Campus

Leebeth Armon

This news was sent to parents on 6th February 2008
We are all very saddened by the news that Leebeth Armon passed away peacefully in her sleep last night. She was such a wonderful teacher and colleague and she made an enormous contribution to our students at ISM Arusha Campus who grieve the loss of someone who made an extraordinary impact in their lives. Leebeth has been the Art teacher on our Arusha Campus for over 8 years and has taught very many of the present Moshi Campus students who have moved from Arusha.

We wish to express our sadness and our thanks for the time we had with Leebeth and our sympathy and condolences to David, Apphia, Megan and Jacob at this time.

Members of the community who wish to express their condolences may contact the family at [The email address is available from the school].

George Bush Visit

This newsletter was sent to parents on 15th February 2008
On Monday, 18th February, it is expected that George Bush will be visiting Arusha. As a result many roads in Arusha will be closed and we have made a decision not to open Arusha Campus on that day because of the difficulty in travelling to and from school.

All classes will take place as usual on the Moshi Campus next week.

The P5/P6 students in Moshi will attend classes as usual on Monday and will go on their field study trip to Lake Magara from Tuesday, 19th to Friday 22nd February.
