MYP Open Day - Invite a Friend
All who are interested in learning more about the school's Middle Years Programme (MYP) for the M1 to M5 classes are welcome to see the programme in action in the classrooms in school this Wednesday, 7th May from 10:30am to 12:35. Families who do not have children in the school are especially welcome and we hope that current ISM families may wish to invite friends or neighbours. We will give a brief introduction to the International Baccalaureate MYP and then invite you to visit MYP classrooms and find out what is really happening. Parents with children currently in P5 or P6 may also be interested to learn more. Snacks will be provided. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday morning.
M3 Science Fair
M3 students have spent the last few weeks carrying out individual scientific investigations into a topic of their choice. They will be displaying and discussing their investigations at the M3 Science Fair in the Biology Laboratory (Room 36) on Wednesday, 7th May. Their experiments will be on display during the MYP Open Day from 10:35 to 12:35 and again in the afternoon from 2pm to 4:30pm. You are very welcome to come and talk with the students about their projects.
Primary Swimming Gala & Football Tournament
Next Saturday, May 10th, we will be hosting an international schools swimming gala and 7-a-side football tournament on the Moshi Campus. The students who are participating in either or both of these events will have received letters informing their parents of their selection on Monday, May 5th.

The swimming gala will start at 9am with the warm-ups beginning at 8.45am. The 7-a-side football tournament will begin around 1pm depending upon the finishing time of the swimming gala and lunch.

Primary Moshi campus students who participate in either event are expected to attend the disco on Saturday evening at 7.30pm in the Dining Hall. This will also be attended by students from IST, and Tanga and Morogoro International Schools. Mr. Steve will be DJ for the last time at ISM - so do not miss it!
IGCSE Exams
The S5 students will begin ther formal written exams on Monday, 12th May. In the last two days of this week (May 8-9), the S5 students will not be required to attend classes. Their teachers will be available in classrooms to assist those that need help in preparation for their exams. Day students may attend school as and when they wish, but are expected to be at home working if they are not in school. Boarders may work in their boarding houses or may travel home for the two days. If your boarding child will be spending these days at home, could you please inform his/her boarding parent in advance?
TOEFL Test
The TOEFL test will be taking place in school this Saturday, 10th May. Registrations were completed about six weeks ago and it is not possible to register for the test now. However, students who are taking the test must attend on the day with a passport-sized photo and they must bring their passport (or Tanzanian driving licence if and only if they are a Tanzanian citizen) with them - photocopies or other forms of ID are not acceptable. The regulations of the Educational Testing Service (ETS) mean that we cannot admit any students if they do not have this type of identification.
Internal school Exams
Students in the M1-M4 classes and in D1 will be taking internal school exams in the week beginning 12th May. This will be a demanding week for many students and represents a part of their annual assessment. Exam schedules have been published around the school and all students should be fully aware of their schedules.
New School Year 2008/09
We are now well advanced in many of our plans for the new school year and parents should by now have received their fee invoices for the year 2008/09. If you have not received this or if you have a query on the invoice, please contact the accounts office on . If your child will not be attending ISM next year, please send an email to me on to let me know. If your situation is currently uncertain, please also let me know the circumstances so that we can plan accordingly. Please note that you could be liable for payment of fees in lieu of notice if we are not informed of a child's withdrawal by this week.
Scholastic Book Club
Mrs Sutherland is now collating students' orders from the Scholastic Book Club sheets. If your child wishes to order from this book club, please get the order to the librarian by Wednesday, 7th May.
ABRSM Practical Exams
The musical instrumental exams will take place in Moshi on Wednesday, 14th May - all students participating have now been advised of the times of their exams. Mock (practice) exams will be held on Friday, 9th May in order to help the students prepare.
Calendar 2009/10
The calendar for the school year 2009/10 has now been determined and is available to download from www.ismoshi.org/Calendar.htm.
D2 Graduation & S5 Ceremony - Privately arranged parties
The D2 students will be graduating later this month and the S5 Ceremony is also fast approaching. We organise celebrations for these events ourselves, but in the past, the students have additionally opted to arrange their own private parties off-campus. Although we have no confirmation of plans, these are likely to be on the weekends of 24th May and 6th June after the official ceremonies. These student-organised parties are not school events and we cannot, as a school, take responsibility for them. Invariably, there is alcohol available at these parties and minimal, if any, adult supervision. We are very concerned about the inevitable, and potentially serious risks that arise from these situations, particularly for many of the younger students who frequently receive invitations to attend and we have endeavoured to deal with such issues from an educational point of view in our Life Skills lessons. We also need to be especially confident that parents are aware of the nature of these events, and are happy with their own children’s involvement. We would therefore offer the following requests and guidelines.

For parents of boarders:
Boarders staying in school will not be allowed to attend any unsupervised parties. If boarders do want to attend, they can only do so if they have been taken out of the school’s care by staying with another family for the weekend. Even if you have already indicated on the Parental Consent form that your child may sign out to friends at weekends, we would like to further confirm that it is acceptable on these particular weekends. If you have children intending to sign out for either of the weekends in question, could you please contact us with that confirmation? You may contact either the boarding parent or Mr Eaton by whatever means is most convenient (telephone, letter, email or fax). Boarders will be expected to remain in school for the weekend if we have not heard from you before May 16th (for the w/e of 23/25 May) or May 30th (for the w/e of 6-8 June).

We would also suggest on this occasion, that you contact the host family directly to discuss what you feel would be appropriate arrangements, curfew etc for your children on the evening of the party.

For parents offering to host boarders:
Boarders signing out on these weekends will need to sign out for the whole weekend from the Friday afternoon until midday on the Sunday, although they may of course attend the Graduation Ceremony if invited. We would suggest that before you take on the responsibility for the guest students over this period, you are confident of their own parent’s expectations in terms of curfew, supervision etc.

We do not in any way wish to curtail the students’ opportunity for well-deserved celebration on these occasions, but we are concerned for their safety and their parents’ full consent and understanding.
