M4 Work Experience
Our M4 students are away from school this week as they are working with a local business and gaining experience at being in a work place. This is a part of the M4 Life Skills course which includes careers exploration as part of the programme. During the week, the students will be supervised by an adult at the place of work and by a teacher in the school who will visit them at work and also talk with their supervisor.
M3 Field Study
The M3 students will be travelling to West Kilimanjaro for three days on Wednesday, 21st May. They will be camping at a farm in the area and studying farming practices in this special environment.
Graduation
Our Graduation Ceremony for the D2 students will take place on Saturday, 24th May at 2pm (for 2:30) in Karibu Hall. Due to limitations of space, entry is by invitation only. We wish all of our graduating students the very best as they reach this important transition in their lives. The evening before Graduation, on Friday 23rd May, the parents of the graduands are invited to join us for a meal at Spice Garden restaurant in Moshi. Each graduand may invite two guests - if he/she wishes to invite additional guests, these will be charged at TSh 15,000/- each and Mr Brandon should be given details by Wednesday (21st). All graduands (but not family members or guests) are required to be in Karibu Hall at 9:30am on Saturday, 24th May for a full rehearsal of the Graduation Ceremony. P6 to M1 Transition
On Thursday and Friday, 22nd and 23rd May, our P6 students will be undertaking a special programme to help familiarise them with the expectations and procedures in our secondary school. A variety of classes and activities will take place on these days to support the transition from P6 to M1.
D1 - Group 4 Project
Our D1 students are required to undertake a team-based science project as part of their assessment for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The D1 students will then present their research and findings to the class on Wednesday, 28th May.

D1 Mock Interviews
Also on Thursday 29th May, each of our D1 students will undertake a mock interview (conducted by a panel of teachers and parent volunteers) designed to give them practice at presenting themselves in this type of situation.
Security Arrangements
We are currently in discussion with a security company about how we can ensure greater security on the Moshi Campus. At present we have two additional guards who have joined our own team of security guards - these additional guards have radios and can summon support from the security company if needed. Other arrangements are planned for the near future.
ABRSM Exams
Congratulations to all those students who took ABRSM practical examinations last week. Almost all passed and special congratulations go to Frances Brandon who achieved the extremely demanding level of Grade 8 in piano, and to Emily Slocombe, Kareena Bassan and Carlotta Margheri who each received a merit in their respective examinations. All students who would like to take ABRSM Theory examinations in October, must give their names (and grades) to either Mr Jones or myself before the end of this term US Consular Visit
The US Embassy Consular Section will be providing consular services in the Moshi Campus on Saturday, 7th June between 10am and midday. Fo those living in Arusha, consular services will be available on the Arusha Campus on Friday, 6th June between 2pm and 4pm.
Music Volunteer
We are still seeking a volunteer who could join our music department for the school year 2008/09. This would ideally suit a recent graduate who has skills in music to share and who would like to experience life in East Africa. No salary is attached to this position, although the volunteer can usually earn some pocket money through private instrumental teaching. If you know of any possible candidates, please contact Steve Jones or Keiron White.
Dar Es Salaam Presentation
International School Moshi will be making a special presentation in Dar es Salaam at the Mövenpick Hotel on Friday, 30th May and again on Saturday 31st May. If you know of any families in Dar es Salaam who might wish to consider enrolling their children in ISM or who simply would like to learn more about the school, please send them an invitation to these presentations or let me know so that I can contact them. Any current parents who are in Dar are very welcome to join me for the presentations and to give their own perspective.
New School Year 2008/09
We are now well advanced in many of our plans for the new school year and parents should by now have received their fee invoices for the year 2008/09. If you have not received this or if you have a query on the invoice, please contact the accounts office on . If your child will not be attending ISM next year, please send an email to me on to let me know. If your situation is currently uncertain, please also let me know the circumstances so that we can plan accordingly. Please note that you could be liable for payment of fees in lieu of notice if we are not informed of a child's withdrawal with at least six school weeks notice.
D2 Graduation & S5 Ceremony - Privately arranged parties
The D2 students will be graduating this week and the S5 Ceremony is also coming up on 6th June. We organise celebrations for these events ourselves, but in the past, the students have additionally opted to arrange their own private parties off-campus. These are likely to be on the weekends of 24th May and 6th June after the official ceremonies. These student-organised parties are not school events and we cannot, as a school, take responsibility for them. Invariably, there is alcohol available at these parties and minimal, if any, adult supervision. We are very concerned about the inevitable, and potentially serious risks that arise from these situations, particularly for many of the younger students who frequently receive invitations to attend and we have endeavoured to deal with such issues from an educational point of view in our Life Skills lessons. We also need to be especially confident that parents are aware of the nature of these events, and are happy with their own children's involvement. We would therefore offer the following requests and guidelines. For parents of boarders: Boarders staying in school will not be allowed to attend any unsupervised parties. If boarders do want to attend, they can only do so if they have been taken out of the school's care by staying with another family for the weekend. Even if you have already indicated on the Parental Consent form that your child may sign out to friends at weekends, we would like to further confirm that it is acceptable on these particular weekends. If you have children intending to sign out for either of the weekends in question, could you please contact us with that confirmation? You may contact either the boarding parent or Mr Eaton by whatever means is most convenient (telephone, letter, email or fax). Boarders will be expected to remain in school for the weekend if we have not heard from you before May 30th (for the w/e of 6-8 June). We would also suggest on this occasion, that you contact the host family directly to discuss what you feel would be appropriate arrangements, curfew etc for your children on the evening of the party. For parents offering to host boarders: Boarders signing out on these weekends will need to sign out for the whole weekend from the Friday afternoon until midday on the Sunday, although they may of course attend the Graduation Ceremony if invited. We would suggest that before you take on the responsibility for the guest students over this period, you are confident of their own parent's expectations in terms of curfew, supervision etc. We do not in any way wish to curtail the students'opportunity for well-deserved celebration on these occasions, but we are concerned for their safety and their parents'full consent and understanding.
