US Consular Visit

Moshi Campus Water
Some parents have asked for further details of the Moshi Campus water supply. The school has two boreholes, each approximately 80m deep, which are fed from an aquafer (underground river) coming down from the mountain. Because of its source, the water is naturally fairly safe, but we also have a small chlorine injection pump which adds a small dose of chlorine to all water in the system. The school's water supply is completely isolated from any other external supply. We are also lucky that Kilimanjaro water (unlike that from Meru) is low in fluorides and well within safe drinking limits. Approximately once a month we test the water by taking samples from the kitchen area and from two other (varying) outlets on the campus. These samples are sent to the laboratory at KCMC for testing and a report is received. It is a great benefit to the students and all others who live on the campus that we can drink water directly from the tap.
Handbooks
We are just about to publish new editions of all our handbooks for the new school year. These include the Primary Handbook, MYP Handbook, Secondary Student's Handbook, Diploma Handbook and Boarding Handbook. All handbooks will be made available to download from the school website. Our Student Expectations leaflet, which details the expectations that we have of our students and possible sanctions should they break these, has not changed and is currently available on the Download page of the website. I am also happy to email any of these to parents on request.
Summit Magazine
Students will receive their copies of the June 2008 edition of The Summit magazine on Monday, 9th June. If you would also like to read a digital copy, this can be downloaded from the school website at the link shown on the right.

Visiting Schools
The Moshi Campus will be used by many visiting school groups during the coming holidays. In the first week, the school is hosting a CAS Camp for groups from a number of schools, and this is followed by other visits. All groups are undertaking community service work in the area and most are also using the opportunity to climb a mountain or visit some of Tanzania's National Parks.
New School Year
Boarders are requested to return to school between 12 noon and 17:30 on Sunday, 10th August. Please contact Sunita Somaiya on for assistance with transport arrangements. Classes will start at the usual time (07:30) on Monday, 11th August, although the first days will include orientation programmes for the M1 and D1 students as well as an MYP information session for parents. More details will be emailed to all parents as the start of the new term draws closer.
Fees for 2008/09
I hope that all parents have now received invoices for the new school year - if you have not received these please email our accounts office on to request these. The first payment for the new year is expected to be received by 1st July 2008.
SAT and PSAT tests
The school is a center for the US SAT (Scholastic Achievement Tests), the results of which are required by most colleges and universities in North America for student admission. We therefore very strongly recommend that any student who may be considering undertaking further studies in North America should take these tests. Our advice is for students in D1 to take the tests in May with an option of a re-take in November. Students in D2 who have not yet taken the tests or whose score is not high enough should aim to take the tests again in November.Careful preparation is key to a high score on these tests and the school provides special preparation classes which will be scheduled on a weekday afternoon next school year. In 2008/09 we will require all D2 students to join these SAT preparation classes in term one unless we have previously been advised by their parents that they do not need to take school-based preparation. From November 2008 until May 2009 we will require all D1 students to join the SAT preparation classes unless we have previously been advised by their parents that they do not need to take school-based preparation. Our hope is that by encouraging students to give a higher priority to test preparation, we can assist them to boost scores. Another form of preparation in the earlier years is for students to take the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) in October. From next term we will also aim to provide some PSAT preparation for M5 students who wish to take the PSAT. This PSAT preparation support will be optional for students. Swimming Pool
Parents are welcome to use the school's swimming pool during weekends and school holidays as well as during the term time when the pool is not used for student activities. Opening times are posted outside the pool. Before using the pool, please purchase a swimming card from the main office. Costs are as follows:
Other charges in 2008/09
There will be no increase in the charge for individual music lessons in 08/09 which will remain at TSh 9000/- per half hour.Lunch and supper tickets for day students will cost TSh 3,200/-. Breakfast tickets will be TSh 1,600/-. Day students who wish to take mid-morning snack in the dining hall may purchase a ticket for TSh 6,000/- per week. Newsletters in 2008/09
Next school year, we plan to consolidate the various newsletters that Moshi parents have been receiving and include all Boarding and Primary news in the main newsletter. We hope that this will make communication simpler for both us and for parents whilst still ensuring that parents are fully informed on school events.
