International School Moshi Moshi Campus Newsletter - 7th June 2009
Dear Parents,
Congratulations to all the students who participated in so many special events last week. The week began with the M2 Culminating Activity: In Control when M2 students from both campuses worked with the children in our Day Care Centre. M4 undertook a successful field study trip to West Kilimanjaro. The M5 students have staged a superb Art Exhibition in Karibu Hall (which is still on view until Monday lunch time); many students demonstrated enormous talent in our Music Concert last Friday evening, and others took part in the Rugby Sevens Tournament held at ISM on Saturday.
There is much happening in school at this time of the year, both inside class and outside, and we appeal to parents not to take their children out of school before the end of term on Wednesday, 17th June. Early departures significantly disrupt our ability to ensure that learning and other important activities continue successfully until the last day.
M1 Fashion Show
On Monday and Tuesday, 8th and 9th June, M1 students will be performing their Culminating Activity - the M1 Fashion Show. Students from the Moshi Campus will join students from the Arusha Campus on Monday and participate in their fashion show in Arusha. Moshi students will return to the Moshi Campus on Monday afternoon. Arusha students will join the Moshi students on Tuesday in Moshi, and return to the Arusha Campus Tuesday afternoon.
M5 Field Study
From Tuesday to Thursday, 9th to 11th June. M5 students will undertake a field study trip to TPC. This will be a joint orienteering trip between the M5 students from both campuses focussing on teamwork and outdoor skills.
School Reports
All students will receive a full report at the end of this term. These will be given to secondary students on Tuesday, 16th June. If you do not receive the printed copy of the report or if you would like to receive a digital copy in pdf format, please contact me on after 16th June.
End of Term Arrangements
The last day of classes is on Wednesday, 17th June. On this day secondary students will be free to leave after 10:15am. From 10:35am to 12 noon there will be parent-teacher meetings in Karibu Hall for parents of secondary students - this is a good opportunity to discuss with teachers any issues arising from your child's performance as shown in his/her report. Primary classes will continue until 12 noon.
M5 Ceremony
We will be holding a ceremony to mark the M5 students' completion of the MYP programme and their transition to the next stage of their education on Tuesday, 16th June at 3pm in Karibu Hall. All are welcome to the ceremony. Parents of M5 students will also receive additional information about the event soon.
PYP Graduation Dinner
Our teachers are hosting the PYP Graduation Dinner for P6 students only on Thursday 11th June at Deli Chez restaurant from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.
P6 to M1 Transition
On Monday 15th June, the P6 students will follow a special programme of "secondary classes" as an introduction to the secondary school which they will be joining in August. Our P6 boarding students will also spend a couple of days in the secondary boarding house on Saturday and Sunday, 13th and 14th June.
Primary Classes
Teachers and students need to be commended for their enthusiasm and commitment to learning despite the end of the term being just ten days away. It is important for students to be at school till the last day as most classes will be rounding off their units of inquiry and students may need to update their portfolios. Most classes are currently busy consolidating basic skills and preparing students for a smooth transition into their new classes next year.
This week teachers and students have organised whole school programmes which will run from Wednesday 10th June to Tuesday 16th June. Special programmes and themes have been designed for the day with activities for students to do to round off our school year. Narelle will be sending out flyers on Monday with details of the week's programme.
Primary Assemblies
Thank you, Ray and P3/4, for a very informative and creative assembly on Water, Water Everywhere. P3/4 students shared their knowledge and learning through fact files, poems, songs, creative writing, a news flash followed by posters and Powerpoint presentations in the classroom.
This week will be our Farewell Assembly for teachers and students who will be leaving the school at the end of the term. We have changed the time to 11.00am on Friday, 12th June in Karibu Hall followed by a shared lunch organised by parents at the pool.
Primary Polo Shirts
From the start of next term in August, we will be requiring all primary students (kindergarten to P6) to wear an ISM Polo shirt when attending classes. These are available in a variety of colours and sizes from the receptionist, Anita, in the main office at a cost of TSh 20,000/- each. Please ensure that you have sufficient shirts for your child.
Parents of boarders may write to request that we buy a certain number of shirts for your child and bill you separately.
We are pleased that our stock is now sufficient to re-introduce this requirement which lapsed in 2008/09 due to poor supply.
M1-M4 Inter-House Sports
On Monday, 15th June, all M1 to M4 students will be taking part in the Inter-House Sports competition from 1:20 to 4:30pm. Our three houses, Kibo, Mawenzi and Meru will be competing in Football, Basketball and Volleyball.
Holiday Reading
We would like to ask all parents to encourage their children to read during the holidays. There are many books available in the school library which can be borrowed before the break and the library will also be open from 7:30am to 5pm on weekdays during the holiday. A suggested book list for holiday reading is available on www.ismoshi.org/read096.htm.
School Fees
We regret to inform families whose fees are still overdue that we will be unable to issue school reports or other documentation to your child at the end of this term. If you are unsure of the status of your fees account, please contact to request a statement.
Fees for the new school year 2009/10 are due to be received by 1st July 2009. If you have not yet received an invoice, please contact our accounts office on .
Summit Magazine
We will be giving printed copies of the June edition of the Summit magazine to all students on 16th June. If you would like to read The Summit before then, a digital copy is available to download from www.ismoshi.org/Download.htm.
Leaving Teachers
Many teachers will be leaving ISM this at the end of this school year on 17th June and we thank them all for the huge amount they have contributed to the school and wish them all the very best for the future.
Ben Wiggins has been at the school for 11 years as our PE and Sports Coordinator and in charge of the Outdoor Pursuits programme. He has also taught both Geography and Life Skills. He has invested many hours into our programmes and made a permanent mark on the school.
Rachel Tariolle-Wiggins joined ISM five years ago and has contributed much, especially in our French department.
Barry Sutherland also arrived at ISM five years ago as our new CEO and has achieved much within the school. He also has the honour of being both the first and last CEO of ISM!
Catriona Sutherland has transformed the Library in her five years as librarian and also as PE and Sports teacher. Catriona has also been the main editor of the Moshi sections of The Summit for a number of years.
Jeff Holcomb has seen the present M5 class through much of their MYP programme in his role as MYP Coordinator and has also taught Economics and Technology.
Simon Mainwaring has been the campus' Technology teacher for three years and has developed the MYP technology programme as well as teaching the diploma ITGS course and leading our Model United Nations group.
Jane Barnett has taught IGCSE, MYP and Diploma art in her two years at ISM and has achieved considerable success - see the Diploma or M5 art exhibitions as clear evidence of her work.
Carol and Chris Dawson joined us two years ago on a leave of absence from Canada to teach Drama, English and History - our recent M2 to M5 drama presentations demonstrate part of what has been achieved.
David Holt and Narelle Norman also joined two years ago and have given much to the primary school. Many of our PYP students will certainly remember them fondly.
Anne Carole Laborde and Andrew Mackenzie have taught French in both primary and secondary, have taught Ecosystems & Societies for the IB Diploma, Science in the MYP and have been responsible for the boys' boarding houses. With these multiple roles, they have made a strong mark on ISM.
Ray Sasman has achieved much in P3/4 over the last two years and has developed some strong units of inquiry contributing significantly to the primary team.
Kate Robertson joined us one year ago as a volunteer to work in the Development Office. She has worked hard particularly on marketing the school, promoting our scholarship programme, and managing the Visiting Schools programme.
Nicolas Garaud has supported the French department as a volunteer since January.
Marlaina Harper has provided much needed support to our P5/6 class since February. She will still be in Moshi and we hope to continue to see her in school.
