  Dear Parents,

Parents' Association Annual General Meeting

The Parents' Association Annual General Meeting will be held at KIA Lodge from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 20. We will arrange a bus to KIA Lodge leaving from the Arusha Campus that afternoon at 2.30 p.m. Parents wishing to take the bus should contact Loise at reception.

Nominations for the new Parents' Association Committee may be submitted in advance to the secretary by 5pm on Monday either by email to the school address: or by written note. You may, of course, nominate a parent from either campus of the school. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor at the meeting. Nominated candidates must indicate their willingness to serve on the committee.

If you would like to read the terms of reference of the Parents' Association, these are available at www.ismoshi.org/pa_tor.pdf on the school website.

Annual Report 2006/07

For the first time, International School Moshi has now published our Annual Report for the school year 2006/07. This report includes a summary of the developments in the school over the year as well as the outline figures from the income and expenditure report. You may download a copy from www.ismoshi.org/ismreport0607.pdf or collect a printed copy at the Parents' Association meeting on Tuesday.

Academic Honesty

With the increased use of electronic media including the internet, the copying of other people's work and identifying it as one's own has become considerably more widespread. The International Baccalaureate Organisation, and other academic bodies with which we deal, take any issues of academic dishonesty extremely seriously. For example, a student who is found to have copied even one or two sentences in an essay submitted to IBO, without identifying their source, is likely to have their results in that subject cancelled and hence could fail to obtain their MYP Certificate or IB Diploma. We have discussed this with all our senior students and strongly emphasised the possible consequences of academic dishonesty. We have also asked all senior students to sign a document to say that they have read the school's Academic Honesty Policy. If you also wish to read this please click here.

Umoja Arts Benefit Performance

On Friday, November 30th at 6pm, the Umoja Arts Project will hold a benefit performance at Arusha Community Church. The evening will feature musical performances by Liza Barley, David Seng'enge, Jessica Welch, Ellen McSweeney, and Randy Stubbs, a dance performance by Tiana Razafy, and drawings by Linda Willms and her students. All are warmly welcomed to attend this special event! There is a suggested donation of 5,000 Tsh per person.

All proceeds will benefit the Umoja Arts Project, a new organisation which promotes arts education, outreach and performance in Arusha. In January 2008, Umoja will celebrate the opening of its new Arts Centre, located near the United Nations. The Arts Centre will offer classes for students of all ages in visual, dance, violin, guitar, cello, and piano. Umoja relies on the support of donors to help support those students who would otherwise be unable to attend these classes.

For further information, see www.ismoshi.org/umoja071130.pdf or email to .

Leebeth Armon will be absent from school for the next two weeks. She is currently getting some tests done in the UK and hopefully will be back with us again shortly. We wish her the very best.

Linda Wilms will be covering Leebeth's art classes in her absence and Ishbel Brydon will be looking after P3/4L as well as S5 ESL classes. Fortunately, Leebeth was able to leave a detailed programme before she left to ensure continuity.

Boarding Coffee Morning

Richard Eaton will be down on Friday, 30th November for a coffee morning related to the Boarding programme in Moshi. It will begin at 8 a.m. in the drama room.

OP trips

ISM attempts to motivate all members of our learning community to become risk-takers, "approaching unfamiliar situations without anxiety; having the confidence and independence to explore new roles." One of our key programmes which promotes this is our Outdoor Pursuits programme. This weekend, M3 and M5 students are accompanying Mr. Schofield on a Level 3 hike to the base of Mawenzi. They are no doubt facing unfamiliar situations, and having to explore and take on roles that they have not done before. Their success in previous trips will help them have the confidence to face these without anxiety, and we hope that their success on this trip will allow them to continue being brave and willing to try new things with confidence and without fear. In the last week of this month, some of our students will take the level 5 hike to Uhuru Peak, which will no doubt be a thrilling as well as challenging experience. Through the series of hikes in the OP programme, students not only have the accomplishment of reaching the top of Africa, they become confident risk-takers, facing challenges and new situations without fear.

Good luck and good climbing to the students this weekend, and to our Uhuru Peak climbers!

LAMDA is back!

You will have seen in your child's bag this week information about LAMDA (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art). We were fortunate to have Heather Lockhurst: a qualified speech and drama teacher on campus this Thursday to share her enthusiasm for this exciting certificated program. Heather will join our ECA program in Term 2 and work with students of all ages. The first three stages of the course involve the students in speaking from memory, poetry, prose and / or a speech. Emphasis is on expression and clarity as well as the improvement of presence, clear communication and personal confidence. If this sounds like a discipline you would like you child involved in, please look out for further notices in our up coming ECA brochure. If you would like more information please feel free to come and chat with me and I can put you in contact with Heather.

ASSESSMENT Coffee Morning

Please mark your calendars for next TUESDAY 20th NOV.

You are invited to participate in this 'hands on approach' to assessment. It is of great importance that you understand how, why and in what ways we assess at ISM. The following week you will be receiving your child' portfolio, followed by Parent Teacher Child Conferences on 29th Nov, this coffee morning is a must to attend! Ms. Natalie Croome will be facilitating this workshop and there will be a delicious morning tea provided! Meet outside the Drama room at 8.00am. Karibu!

PPTV – Primary Perspectives Television

This year the primary performance will not be a bought script but rather a student generated inquiry that reflects a sampling of trans disciplinary themes happening in the classrooms. The name of our show is: PPTV Primary Perspectives Television. Students have already drafted their scripts, songs are being written and sets are being designed. New units of inquiry have begun, language connections are being made and drama is now the name of the game. Anticipation is high!

Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances we have had to postpone the show from Dec 13 & 14 to the 24 & 25 January.

P5/6 sports exchange to ISM – Moshi Campus

Next Friday 23rd November all P5/6 students will travel to Moshi for an end of term exchange. While in Moshi we will share in the primary assembly, play netball and have a mini P5/6 swim gala. I would like to thank in advance Chira and Sagit who will be accompanying us and putting their ECA swim team through their paces. Go ISM!

Warm Regards
