Secondary News
M4 Work Experience
The students have finished up their week of work, and will be reporting back to classes next week. We hope they have found it a valuable and challenging experience, and that they have a greater understanding and appreciation of the world of work.
M3 class trip
While being a "risk-taker" is on our learner profile, that doesn't mean acting dangerously. Unfortunately, the M3 students learned that the hard way this week as we were forced to cancel the class trip in the face of treacherous roads and the illness of the trip leader. While we sympathize with the disappointment the students are feeling, we would much rather they be disappointed than in danger. We apologize for the development to all M3 students and parents.
Final Reports
Secondary reports will be sent home on Monday, 9 June, for all students in M1-M4. No formal conferences are being scheduled for secondary students. Instead, any secondary parents who would like to meet with teachers during these weeks should contact me or the school secretary to set up an appointment. We are always available to meet with parents.
Mysterious Meetings
A few brave students took a risk and committed themselves to making a difference at ISM. They will be meeting up on Monday morning for a special convention to try to make a change for the better at ISM. Look for more information from these caring and committed students next week! (And to those who are taking part on Monday - you know who you are! See you Monday morning!!)

Hongera Sana! P6 Students' PYP Exhibition
You are invited to join us at ISM - Arusha Campus on Friday, 30th May from 8.00 a.m. until 12.00 noon to celebrate the end of our Primary School Years. As part of the Primary Years Programme (PYP), we have been working together in research groups to enquire into an area of interest to us, under the Organising Theme of "How We Share The Planet". We would like to share our knowledge and other results of our learning with you on this day.
Hongera Sana! All Primary Students
Parent, Teacher, Child Conferences occur when the student introduces his/her parents to their portfolio and any other work in the classroom which they wish to share. The Parent, Teacher, Child Conferences take the form of an extended discussion that involves students leading their parents and teacher through their own understanding of their recent learning and their goals for future learning. The ability of the student to "lead" the conference depends in the child's age, ability and past experience, however the goal is to increasingly develop each student's ability to confidently discuss themselves and their work in an honest and open manner.
Why Use Parent-Teacher-Child Conferences?
"Conferencing" as an assessment and reporting tool is an expression of a fundamental belief that students can and should reflect upon and share responsibility for their own learning. It also communicates to the whole school community that we value the students in the assessment process by placing them at the very centre of their own learning and assessment.
  • To help develop constructive and open relationships and communication between students, parents and teachers.
  • Conferences provide an opportunity for student, teacher and parents to reach mutual understandings of the nature of the work completed and the progress it indicates.
  • Conferences validate student learning and allow for discussion and explanation of individual achievements in a personal setting.
  • Through focusing on student work and analyzing what it demonstrates about the student as a learner, students, teachers and parents are provided with an opportunity to address specific issues.
  • Honest and open discussion, focusing on evidence of student learning, allows opportunities for students, teachers and parents to collaborate in making plans for the future and to provide encouragement for the student as he/she continues to learn.
How Do We Use Parent-Teacher-Child Conferences?
The portfolio and any other significant and relevant student work provide the focus for the Parent-Teacher-Child Conference. The portfolio is sent home two days before the Parent-Teacher-Child Conference takes place.
  • The Parent-Teacher-Child Conference is scheduled to take place over a 30 minute period.
  • The teacher welcomes the child and his/her parents to the classroom as they arrive and provides the student with the opportunity to talk with their parents for approximately 10 minutes.
  • The student initiates the celebration, walking their parents around the classroom to look at and discuss the work which is displayed there.
  • The student and parents sit at a desk and take time to look through the portfolio and discuss the work included there and the formal teacher assessments and evaluations.
  • Parents are encouraged to ask questions which will assist them in gaining information about the extent to which their child understands the purpose of the learning.
  • When the student indicates that he/she is ready, the teacher joins the group to further discuss the student's work and progress during the term. This provides an opportunity to discuss areas of concern with all parties involved and to celebrate student learning.
PTC conferences will take place on Thursday 5th June.
