Dear Parents, Welcome back to all returning students and a big Karibuni to the new students at International School Moshi Primary. The primary enrolment includes seven new students. I am sure that the returning students will help the new students as they get to know the routines of daily life at ISM Primary. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the new teachers to the ISM primary teaching staff.
The Primary staff would like to invite all parents to a Meet the Teachers meeting this week. These sessions will be arranged over two afternoons as follows:
After School Clubs We would like the After School Activity programme to begin next Monday August 20th. The clubs will be in two time slots, 1.30pm-2.20pm and 2.30pm-3.30pm. The 10-minute gap between the first and second club should allow the students sufficient time to get from one club to another and not be late! The first week of clubs is a ‘Trial Week’ where the students attend the clubs to see what they will be like. If your child returns to their club for the second time we then expect them to be committed to attending that club to the end of term. If any parent would like to offer any special interests or skills to add to our clubs that are offered please sign the slip attached and return it to me by Wednesday August 15th so that I can issue the children’s choice sheet to them on Wednesday. I would like to thank Mr. Behrendt and Mrs. Schimana who organised the primary football club last year. Unfortunately due to other commitments they are unable to continue to offer this club so if anyone else would be available to take the football club I know the students would be very grateful. I would also like to meet the parents who are volunteering their help and support for an informal talk. I am available each morning this week between 7.30am and 8am in my office. Please drop in and make an appointment or telephone the school and ask for extension 110. I look forward to meeting you. Stationery This year we would once again like the children to have their own stationery at school. This should help to eliminate some of the wasted time that can occur when they are looking for pencils, rulers etc. The following lists indicate what items your child will need for school depending upon his/her class. Please ensure that your child has these items by the end of the current school week. P5/6: • Writing pencils • 30cm ruler (transparent) • Maths set (around Tsh1,500 in town) • Pencil sharpener • Eraser • Colouring pencils (optional) • Felt pens (optional) • Dictionary P3/4: • Writing pencils • 30cm ruler (transparent) • Maths set (around TSh 1,500/- in town) • Pencil sharpener • Eraser • Colouring pencils (optional) • Felt pens (optional) P1/2: • Writing pencils (for take home folder) • Small ruler (transparent - for take home folder) • Pencil sharpener • Eraser • Colouring pencils (optional) • Felt pens (optional) • Clear folder Revised Primary School Timings I apologise if there has been any confusion regarding the revised Primary School times and would like to take this opportunity to ensure that everyone is aware of how things will work this academic year. The Kindergarten times are - 7:30am to 11:15am. There is an option for parents to pay an additional charge for Sia to organise an additional play session from 11:15am to 1:05pm. Please contact me for further details. The P1 to P6 times are – 7:30am to 1:05pm on Mondays to Thursdays and 7:30am to 12:35pm on Fridays. If your child is staying for an after school club on any day of the week (Monday to Thursday) they will have from 1.05pm to 1.30pm to eat their lunch. This may be a packed lunch, food from the Duka or food from the dining hall. Arrangements have been made at the Duka and with the dining hall to ensure that the primary students can still order food in this way. However, the students must remember to sign the Lunch register when they get to school to ensure the appropriate amount of food is allocated for primary students. A timetable will be issued to you all so that you know when your child’s specialist lessons are happening and what days they need Library books, swimming clothes, P.E. kits etc. Assembly Schedule An assembly schedule will be posted on the Primary notice board on Friday and a copy will be sent to all parents at that time. The assembly on Friday’s will start at 9.30am and will last for approximately 30 minutes. The assemblies will be a mixture of sharing work, individual class assemblies, Music assemblies, Language ‘B’ assemblies and rewards time (Eddy Elephant award). We hope that parents are able to come to the assembly when their child/children are participating in the assembly but would also advise you that parents are invited to attend assembly at any time. Polo-shirts If you have not yet purchased these items for your child I will be available from 7:30am to 8am in my office and after school this week for you to purchase the items. There are also squorts, shorts and full-length long trousers for purchase, along with black P.E. shorts and P.E. t-shirts for sale. Please ensure that your child is wearing his/her polo shirt every day at school. When your child has P.E. she/he should wear their P.E. kit to school to avoid long sessions of the students changing clothes. They may bring their polo shirts and shorts/skirts/trousers to change into after their P.E. lesson. Mother Tongue Books I am still trying to acquire a range of Mother tongue books for the children to add in each class library and hope that you can help us with this aim. If you have any books in your Mother Tongue that your child no longer listens to or reads we would be very grateful if you would donate them to us. Parent Volunteers If there are any parents who would like to volunteer their help in the primary classrooms please contact your child’s class teacher or myself. We can then arrange a suitable time and activity for you to assist with. Parent E-mails and Telephone Numbers I would like to update my list of parent e-mails and telephone numbers and would request that you supply this information on the sheet attached. Please be advised that once I have received this information all newsletters will be sent digitally. Swimming We would like to stress at the beginning of the year that ‘Swimming’ is a compulsory part of the school curriculum and as such your child should have their swimming attire in school on the appropriate day. I shall also keep some swimwear in a selection of sizes for the children who forget theirs so that parents do not have to make additional trips to the school. I have a few sizes already but would be grateful if you could make any contributions of swimwear or towels to this store. I will ensure that these items are cleaned after use. Make-up and Earrings Please ensure that your child does not come to school wearing make-up and that the earrings they wear are appropriate for school. Long, dangly earrings are not appropriate. Mobile Phones Primary students should not have Mobile Phones at school. If they need to make a call to home during the school day it should be done through the primary office or the administration office at the front of school. Please see the Primary Handbook on the school website for further details about mobile phones, make up earrings etc. BBQ, Swim and Disco – August 24th On Friday August 24th from 4pm to 8pm we will have a BBQ and Disco for all primary students. Further details to follow by the end of the week. Primary Assistants This year the primary assistants will be working in the classes as follows:
Mahdu Chibber is offering beginner piano lessons for primary students. Please contact her directly. Language ‘B’ Classes This year Anne Carole Laborde will teach the French classes. She is a native French speaker and her son Jinho is in the P5/6 class. Joyce Semiono will be teaching the Kiswahili classes as Nainkwa Mvungi is off on sick leave for the term. Shoes and Indoor Shoes We would like to remind you that the students should have shoes with a back on them for school. If they wear backless shoes they will not be allowed to play on the climbing frames. We would also like to encourage you to send your child with a pair of indoor shoes. I realize that it is not rainy at the present time but it is wise that they are at school in case we do have heavy rainfall. Orientation of New Students Class teachers will be monitoring the new students to ensure that they settle into school well over the next few weeks. Please see your child’s class teacher if you are concerned about anything at any time. Reporting to Parents 2007/08 Below please find a letter that details the schedule of reporting to parents for this academic year. This starts with the Meet the Teachers Meetings this week and then carries on with Goal-setting sessions in Weeks 2 and 3. Further details of the Goal-setting sessions will be sent to parents on Friday this week. All four classes are off to an enthusiastic start with students considering their goals and expectations for the academic year. We are all looking forward to a successful year and hope that we will see parents supporting the variety of wonderful activities planned for the children during the year. Those of you who had children at the school last year will notice that the methods we are using are very similar to those used last year. The Primary Staff has spent a considerable amount of time researching what is considered as best practice around the world and have adopted what we view as a thorough and informative reporting procedure. The dates and events are detailed below: Term 1 Week 1: August 15th and August 16th 2007: ‘Meet The Teachers Meetings’ 1.30-2pm on Moshi Campus – 2-2.30pm on Arusha Campus Weeks 2 & 3: August 20th to August 31st 2007: Goal Setting Meetings – After school on Moshi Campus – Before school, after school or lunchtime on Arusha Campus Week 15: November 27th 2007: Portfolios go home with your child’s full report November 29th 2007: Parent, Teacher, Child Conference (including Goal Setting) No formal classes for students. Term 2: Week 9: March 11th 2008: Portfolios go home with two Unit of Inquiry Relections March 13th 2008: Student Led Celebrations No formal classes for students. Week 19: Tuesday 3rd June: Portfolios go home with your child’s full report Thursday 5th June 2008: Parent/Teacher Conference The Parent, Teacher, Child Conference and the Student Led Celebrations are non-teaching days. Parents will sign up for a 1 hour slot in their child’s class and participate in a variety of ‘hands-on’ activities which will be taught to them by their own child. Through these activities your child will truly be able to demonstrate to you their developing knowledge and understanding in a range of curricular activities. Kind regards Mrs. Kathy Slocombe, Head of Primary, Moshi Campus Mrs Betty Brown, Head of Primary/PYP Coordinator, Arusha Campus |
