Dear Parents, I would like to start this newsletter with a series of "Congratulations" and "Thank yous". First, a big thank you to all the parents and students who presented information, news and stories in last Friday’s assembly on the theme of 'Mother Tongue' languages. It was wonderful to see so many people involved. Second, congratulations to all of the primary students who participated in the Variety Show last Friday evening in Karibu Hall. I would also like to thank Steve Jones for organising the evening so that these students had an opportunity to get up on the stage and perform their dances. This was a very enjoyable evening for everyone who came along. Third, I would also like to congratulate all the ISM students, teachers and parents who participated in the Kilimanjaro 5km Fun Run, Half Marathon and Marathon last Sunday March 2nd. The youngest participant who actually ran was a member of the Kindergarten class at ISM; I wonder who the oldest participant was? Fourth, Wednesday March 5th was World Maths Day and in celebration of the day ISM primary students participated in ten different Mathematics activities in teams. This was a great experience for the students who thoroughly enjoyed the day. Thank you to the teachers, primary assistants and parents who organized and ran the activities for this day day. Finally, thank you to Ray and the P3 class, for their assembly today on the 'Rights of a Child'. Reports and Student-Led Conference DayAll primary students will be taking home their Portfolios and Written Reports for the third and fourth units of inquiry on Tuesday March 11th. The Kindergarten students will take home their Portfolio and the Written Report for their second unit of inquiry. The reports and portfolios are followed by the Student-Led Conference Day on Thursday March 13th. This is a non-teaching day at school but one where you attend school with your child to experience what it is like to be a student at ISM primary. This is a time to celebrate your child’s learning with him or her and so must be seen as a positive experience which everyone is prepared for. In view of this I would like to stress the importance of parents spending time with their child between Tuesday and Thursday of next week going through the written report and the portfolios so that you are aware of the learning that has been experienced by your child so far this year. Please sign up for the conferences on the timetable sheet on the veranda side of your child's class. N.B. The primary assistants will supervise siblings on the primary playground area while the conferences are happening so that parents can be in the classroom with just the child who is conducting the conference. If you have a young child who you do not feel will stay with the primary assistants at this time we would appreciate it if you could make alternative child-minding arrangements. Swimming Sports Day - Friday March 14thFriday March 14th will be our Moshi campus primary swimming sports day. The races will begin at 9am and will be completed by the end of tuition time. We hope to see you at the pool from 9am. Please ensure that your child has his or her swimming clothes, towels, water bottle, sun cream and a hat for the day.Primary Disco - Friday March 14th in the Social CentreThe primary students disco will be on Friday March 14th from 6pm to 9pm. All students can attend from 6pm but the Kindergarten and P1/2 students must leave at 7.30pm so that the older primary students can enjoy the later part of the evening. There will be sausages and hamburgers in rolls available from the barbecue from 6.30pm. Please indicate on the bottom of this page if your child/ren wish to purchase food on the night so that we know how much food to order. The slip should be returned by Tuesday March 11th at the latest.Kind regards Kathy Slocombe Head of Primary P5/6 Class ContributionWell, there is plenty to go in the P5/6 newsletter article this time around. We are busy, busy, busy in Room 6, especially in the lead up to the Student Led Conferences next week. But let me go back a little first.CAMP - Yes you have probably heard all about it, and maybe a few times over by now, but it was really terrific. The site, the food, the weather..... all this was great, but I think it was especially rewarding because of the relationships that grew and the mixing that took place amongst staff and kids from both campuses. Behaviour was another big factor. The kids were wonderful, they were respectful of all adults, they were enthusiastic, they were independent and they were very cooperative, (especially at lights-out which was such a blessing for the adults who get very tired at the days end). Speaking of successes, World Maths Day was definitely one. Well done to those P5/6ers who took on a caring, encouraging leadership role and helped to bring smiles and understanding to the littler ones. Can I also thank Nell and Elisa for their help in our classroom over the past few weeks? The kids have loved their extra attention and assistance. Our new unit is Who Am I to Judge? What a great title. What we will be focusing on is prejudice; prejudices in our own eyes, prejudices in history, the unfairness of prejudices and their possible consequences. There will be lots of room in this unit for self reflections, and for the understanding of how prejudices develop and how we can hope to combat them in our lives. We are also learning about "Luck" and chance under the Maths heading of Probability. We are exploring gambling too and are using our Maths brains to understand how gambling is not a way you can make money. But you will find out plenty about this at our Conference Day and perhaps you can even help us in our understanding about both these things. ![]()
