Moshi Primary News - 18th April 2008
Dear Parents,

I would like to offer a belated return to the third and final term of the 2007/08 academic year and to welcome three new students to the Primary School: Silipa Swai and Madeleine Dawson to the Kindergarten class and Jack Stanley to the P1/2 class.

The students are all busy on their existing Unit of Inquiry and this week two of the classes have been on excursions to support their unit. P1/2 took a trip into Moshi to support their unit on ‘Communities’ and the P5/6 class visited the Sibisusu Centre yesterday for a combined visit with the P5 students from ISM Arusha Campus.
P6 Class
The P5/6 class will split into two classes, a P5 class with David as their teacher and a P6 class with me as their teacher as from Monday 21st April. This afternoon the P6 students carried the tables to their new room and set the room up for themselves in what they think will be an appropriate work arrangement. For the next seven weeks these students will be working on their final PYP Unit of Inquiry which will culminate in the PYP Exhibition on Wednesday June 4th with the official opening beginning at 7pm at Karibu Hall. All parents are welcome to this evening event so please put the date and time in your diary.
Indoor Shoes and Shoes for Walking to the Pool
As you are well aware the weather is extremely wet at the moment and the students arrive at school each day quite muddy. All students are supposed to have a pair of indoor shoes to change into upon arrival at school so that the classrooms do not get full of mud. Could you please ensure that your child has a pair of indoor shoes for Term 3?

Secondly, the students should have a pair of shoes for walking to the swimming pool. Many of the students are walking around in bare feet which are not acceptable. Please ensure that your child has the appropriate footwear for this session each week.
PYP Parent Workshop
There will be a PYP Parent Workshop on Monday 28th April at 6.30pm in Room 16. The focus area for the evening will be Mathematics and we are hoping for a large turn-out so that parents can really gain an understanding of how Mathematics is taught in the PYP.
Family Fun Day - Saturday, April 19th
The Family Fun Day is taking place on the Arusha Campus tomorrow Activities start at 10am and include various adult and student sports activities including basketball and soccer and an endurance swimming trial. Bring your sports kit and swimming gear! The day will end with a talent show from Arusha Campus students.

Lunch can be purchased from 1pm to 2pm with a variety of foods on sale and the Arusha Social Committee will be selling food and drinks. The Parent Association will serve free coffee and cakes from 10am to 2pm.
Russian Ballet
The Crown of the Russian Ballet will be performing in Arusha Campus on Sunday evening, 4th May. Some tickets are still available at Tsh 20,000/- each. Please contact the Arusha Campus on or by phone on 027-25050329 to reserve a ticket.
Public Holidays
There are two public holidays in the near future. Saturday, 26th April is Union Day, and Thursday, 1st May is Workers Day. There will be no classes on 1st May, but we expect all students to be in class as usual on Friday, 2nd May.
ABRSM Practical Exams
These have now been confirmed as taking place in Moshi on Wednesday, 14th May. Students will be advised of their own exam times soon.
Old rugs, Mats, Cushions and Kangas
If you have any old rugs, mats, cushions or kangas that you would like to donate to the primary school they would be gratefully appreciated.
End of Year Picnic at TPC - Tuesday 10th June 10am to 2pm
The end of year celebration day will be held at the Guest House at TPC and all parents are invited to attend the picnic on that day with their primary child(ren). I shall send out a letter closer to the day to find out which parents are attending the picnic and whether you wish to drive people there. School vehicles will be arranged for the students whose parents are unable to attend on the day. Another date to add to your diaries!
PYP Curriculum Corner
Thank you to Ms. Rosi for the PYP Curriculum contribution.
P3/4 Primary News
Dear Parents of P3/4 Students,
We have looking at Rainforests in our unit of inquiry for the past four weeks. The students have been very enthusiastic about creating a freeze in class depicting a rainforest and many of the animals found in it. This has been a great extension on our unit; Keys to the Kingdom, as we now had the opportunity to look more closely at animals found specifically in rainforests. The students were able to identify different levels in the rainforest; emergent layer, canopy, understory and the forest floor. It was interesting to discover the various ecosystems and habitats found in each level.

In Information Technology we created a web showing features, types of rainforests, animals as well as related issues, using Microsoft Word. The students explored using auto shapes as well as other unfamiliar functions on the computer.

During our language sessions this week the students each chose a rainforest animal to write about. They have written short rhymes about these animals and have illustrated their work. They have put it up on display in class. Please come and have a look at it.

We have written our own play based on one of the books (The Great Kapok Tree) we have studied during this unit. The students are in the process of making masks to portray each character in our play. We will perform this play at the end of next week as our summative assessment. You are invited to join us for this special event on Friday, 25th April at 11:45 in class. Please try to make it as the students are working very hard on making this a very special event especially for you. They will need to wear black trousers and T-shirts on that day, with an African kanga draped over their backs. If you do not have a kanga at home, please speak to me well in advance to make alternate arrangements.

We look forward to seeing on Friday. If you need any additional information about this event, please come and see me in class about it.

Below are a few of our animal poems to give you a preview of what to expect in class. Enjoy!

The Tapir By Mohammed

Hello!
I am the king of the jungle

I eat leaves that jiggle and dangle

If I see you near my tree I will sting you like a bee

So be careful you don’t bump into me

Or I will hit you so high that you will fly through the sky

Snake in a tree By Joris

I am a snake long and fat.
I eat small animals just like that
I slither on the ground.
Where good food can be found.

I am a snake long and fat!!!!!!!!

I am a toucan By Hugo

I can fly. I know you can.

I like to fly until I touch the sky.

I am black and pink and I can flap my wings.

I have a ring on my chin.

I like to sit on trees and eat leafs.

I like to lay eggs in the sun until I play with my friends.

And people like me because I am pretty.
