New Teachers - August 2011

We are pleased to be welcoming the following new teachers to ISM in August 2011.

Rafael Holt, Environmental Systems & Chemistry (Moshi Campus)

I'm coming to ISM from Cambridge, UK, where I teach at one of the few state schools that do the IB Diploma Programme. I've been here for three years and am very excited to be moving on to such a fantastic place - and by that I mean both ISM and Tanzania! I was born and grew up in Lima, Peru, where I did the DP (so I know what it's like!) and then moved to London to study Chemistry. During university some friends and I went to Malawi to do some volunteer civil engineering work and since then I've wanted to come back and work in East Africa. After living in Cambridge, which is in the flattest part of the UK, I'm glad that I'll be able to climb some mountains again and really look forward to getting involved with the outdoor activities at ISM. I'm also a keen squash, tennis and football player and also love cycling and anything involving the sea, particularly surfing.

I'll be teaching DP and MYP Chemistry, DP Environmental Systems and a bit of MYP Science and am very happy to be joining you all in Moshi, living in the beautiful surroundings and learning Swahili.

Minh Nguyen, Geography Teacher (Moshi Campus)

Hello ISM! My name is Minh Nguyen (pronounced Ming Win). I am from the green forests, the Cascade Mountains, the Puget Sound, and the Pacific Ocean that altogether make up the Pacific Northwest of the United States. I was born and raised in Washington state and I am eager to get out and be a part of the larger world that we live in. I am very excited for my move to Tanzania and hope that I am able to learn from my new community and share my life experiences and expertise in Geography and History with my students. I will be teaching DP Geography, MYP Geography and Humanities at ISM.

I have been teaching in Washington for five years and with the exception of my student teaching experience in Ecuador, this will be my first international teaching position. I have a passion for travel, food/cooking, warm climates, exciting people, news and politics, books, music and outdoors. As other teachers have expressed, I too am thrilled to have the opportunity to be an active part of the school's academic and non-academic programs like the Outdoor Pursuits and the swim team. Nerves? Only one: mosquitoes!

Rosemary Bango, Economics & Primary Boarding Parent (Moshi Campus)

Hallo there,
My name is Rosemary Bango. I am a Kenyan, and have been a teacher at Saint Mary's School, Nairobi, Kenya, where I taught Economics, Business Studies and Geography. I graduated with a Bachelors Degree from Kenyatta University, Nairobi.

I am married to Silvanus, who is a retired banker. We are blessed with four children, two girls and two boys who are now young adults. Our first born has completed her first degree and is working while the other three are still in college. My family members will visit me in Moshi whenever they have the opportunity. We come from the Western part of Kenya, in South Nyanza, but currently live and work in Nairobi, the Capital city of Kenya.

I join ISM to teach DP Economics, MYP Humanities and as a Boarding Parent. I look forward to working with you all. Having taught in several schools in different parts of Kenya,I feel exited to move to Tanzania and join the ISM community.

I enjoy singing and listening to gospel music, travelling and cooking.
See you soon,
Rosemary Bango.

Anine Pier, Visual Art Teacher (Moshi Campus)

Hello, I am Anine Pier and I will be joining ISM as a Visual Arts teacher in August 2011. As a child I spent several years in Ghana, where my parents met, and I am very excited to be returning to Africa. Tanzania will be a new country and a new adventure!

I studied in Amsterdam and New York where I obtained my Bachelor in Fine Arts and Education and I have been teaching art for about 5 years now. My teaching experiences so far have been at International Schools in the Netherlands and two years at an International School in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Here I was a PYP teacher in the art department and I am looking forward to working with the MYP and DP students at ISM.

I am eager to learn a bit of Swahili and I hope it will be a bit easier to pick up than the Khmer language! I enjoy going to the gym, visiting with friends, biking (I am Dutch after all) and doing my printmaking. I am excited to meet everyone, become part of the ISM community and explore all the things Tanzania has to offer.

See you soon,
Anine

Jann Hattle, P3/4 Teacher (Moshi Campus)

Hi There! My name is Jann Hattle and I am really looking forward becoming part of the ISM Community as well as returning to Africa.

I was born and spent most of my life in Zimbabwe, before moving to Windhoek, Namibia for 14 years and then on to New Zealand, where we have spent the past 13 years.

I attended Rhodes University in South Africa where I gained a BA (Phys. Ed.) and a Higher Diploma in Education (Post Grad. Sec). My husband, Bob, calls me "The Swiss Army knife of Teaching", because I have taught High School Phys. Ed. and Geography, a range of classes and subjects at Junior School level, was involved in establishing and working in a pre-school and have had nearly 11 years experience of teaching children with Special Needs.

Bob is a retired aircraft engineer and is equally excited about our move. Our three adult children (24, 22 and 20) are all remaining in New Zealand. I was a competitive athlete once upon a time and my interests still include distance running and swimming, as well as reading, arts and crafts and scrapbooking.

Betty Peralta, ESL and English B (Moshi Campus)

Habari! That’s me in the dorky hat. My son, Franky (pictured) and I were about to embark on a hot air balloon adventure, and I was too cold to care about how I looked that day. I’m now writing from Kuwait, where the temperature is 109F/43C, so there is no bundling up happening here!

I am a mother of 16 years, a teacher of 12, a raw foodie of 7, and an intermittent blogger, traveler, and karaoke singer. I hold an MIT from Seattle University, and am currently studying for an MS in Mental Health through University of Massachusetts Boston, as well as working on certification for The Work of Byron Katie. Throughout the years, I have taught K-12 at every level except 1st grade, moving between roles of Generalist, Resource, and ESL.

After living overseas for 5 years, Franky is now learning how to be an American teenager by living with his grandmother and attending high school in Seattle. He says he'll join me in Moshi to begin his African adventure next year. Together we have enjoyed schools in Seattle, Washington, where we were both born and raised; The Dominican Republic, where I had served in the Peace Corps 10 years prior to moving there as a teacher; and then Kuwait, for both Franky and my first high school experience. Moving to Africa has been a dream for many years. Franky and I feel extremely lucky - both to get to live in Moshi, and to join you at ISM.

Totty Aris, Head of Secondary and Drama (Moshi Campus)

Totty Aris has been in international education most of her life. Although British she grew up in Austria and went to a local school until age 13 and then to the Vienna International School. This was followed by her final IB Diploma years at the United World College of the Atlantic. She has been teaching in Internationals schools in Malaysia and Bangladesh. Totty is passionate about the PYP 'I wouldn't choose any other kind of schooling for my child' she says and is a great advocate for the MYP as she used to be an MYP Coordinator. She enjoys trekking and is looking forward to getting on an OP trip as long as her knee holds out. She will be teaching Drama and has high hopes for a musical in Semester 2!

Matt Aris, Kivuli Boys Boarding Parent (Moshi Campus)

Matt Aris is our Kivuli boarding parent and comes with previous houseparent experience (6 years in Penang, Malaysia). He also recently qualified as a PE and DT MYP teacher (3 years in Dhaka) so he knows what the expectations of parents and the teachers are. He has sailed halfway round the world in a previous life, run two ultra-triathlons and walked to basecamp, Everest - outdoor pursuits is his middle name!

Kim Hunink, Dutch Teacher (Moshi & Arusha Campuses)

Hello! My name is Kim Hunink, the new Dutch Teacher at ISM. I'm from The Netherlands, grew up in the middle of our 'mini' country (small village - two cows, a sheep and an apple tree) and now live in our capital, Amsterdam. I studied Dutch in the southern Netherlands, worked there a few years, moved to Amsterdam and I began to focus on special education, particularly deaf education. After a specialization, I got a job at a school for deaf and hearing-impaired children and kids with speech and language problems. A huge challenge!
So I'm used to working with many different levels in one group and another advantage ... I'm used to kids who will not listen. ;-)

But how much I like my work and what a wonderful city Amsterdam is. I'm so excited to come your way! I want to see the world and especially Africa. I only visited the north of the continent, like many Europeans, and that will not be comparable to the East of Africa, I think. I'm looking forward to teaching the Dutch students, preparing them for graduation, while I'm also developing myself. And all this in such a beautiful place! I hope to explore the environment through participating in activities and trips. Other fun activities: reading (lots and lots of reading!), writing, music, dinner with friends, long distance running and as befits a true Dutchman, I love cycling and cheese.
See you soon!
Greetings, Kim Hunink

Hadewych Dujardin, Music Teacher, (Arusha Campus)

My name is Hadewych Dujardin. I was born in Belgium in 1975. My grand parents were the first ones of our family who moved to Congo in the 1950s. Since then all the Dujardins have been living in different parts of the world. My father moved to Rwanda when I was 3 where we remained until I was 18.

I stayed in Belgium for quite a number of years. I studied music and worked for 6 years at the music schools of Kuurne and Ruiselede. After my brother, Reinout Dujardin, left for Kampala, Uganda, I decided to go abroad too and ended up in Hanoi, Vietnam, where I've been teaching for the past three years. Hanoi is a bit of a crazy city with great food, unbelievable traffic with tons of motorbikes squeezing themselves through the streets, friendly people, great lakes, not too hot but extremely humid, constant noise, and non stop construction! For the last 6 months, the 2-metre wide lane outside my house has been a huge construction site with drilling, jack-hammering, and diggers working night and day. Despite the crazy city, I enjoyed teaching at Hanoi International School because I got to teach music to students of every age (from Reception all the way to IB!).

Here's a bit about myself: I'm fluent in Dutch, French and English, and I can speak a little Spanish too! The transverse flute is my main instrument, but I also like to accompany my students on the piano. My other passion is the cello, although I haven't been able to play my beautiful cello recently because it couldn't handle the humidity in Hanoi. I hope I'll be able to repair it in Arusha. My hobbies are: digital photography, reading, theater, films, music. My little boy Liam, who's 18 months now will be accompanying me to Africa. I've enjoyed growing up in Rwanda and I'm sure Liam will have a great experience in Arusha!

Kelly Smith, Primary Teacher, (Arusha Campus)

Hi ISM-A! My name is Kelly Smith and I am from Chicago, IL, U.S.A. I graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in Elementary Education and Human Needs - Global Resources. I was fortunate to be able to spend 7 months in Arusha in 2010, while completing my student teaching at ISM-A in P1/2 from August-November 2010.

I love Eastern Africa and apart from Tanzania have spent time in parts of Uganda, Zambia, Kenya and South Africa. I love traveling all together, and have also been to Mexico, Costa Rica, Aruba and Italy. Any free time I have is spent on dance, yoga, crafting, baking, listening to music, talking with my family or drinking coffee with a friend!

I am thrilled to be rejoining the ISM community in August 2011 and can't wait to meet you all!
